Writer by Default…

So, today I got laid off. I’ve been working with the same company for 11 years, since I moved to Canada in fact. And now they’ve been bought out and I fell victim to the latest round of cuts.

Don’t feel sorry for me. My prospects are good and there’s lots of opportunities out there. I enjoy what I do as a day job and I have a young family to support, so I will definitely be starting the job search soon.

However, I find myself in a situation I’ve never been in before. Right now, other than dad and husband, my only current employment is… well… writer.

Holy crap! I’m a full time writer! OK, so I’m a writer by default; this wasn’t planned by any means. Nevertheless, for better or for worse, for the time being my occupation is writer.

Guess I should go write something :)

  1. Hey, congrats on living the dream! (And of course, I’m being facetious.) I hope the saying about one door opening is true. Of course, in your case, perhaps it’s not so much a door as a … rip in space/time.

    Hang in there.

  2. I feel your pain, Richard. I was laid off after a company bought us out 11 years ago, and it still smarts. Still, new horizons and all that, and it’s not as if you haven’t got the coolest job in the world to keep you busy until something … duller comes along!

    So, yeah, write something already!

  3. I quit teaching mid-year about three years ago. I was terrified of my future, but too worn down and depleted to not do it. My life plan was always to be a writer, but logical teenage me decided that when I went to college I should learn to be a teacher so that I had a career to fall back since writing was not a sure thing. I became the teacher, not the writer that I had always wanted to be and the building I worked in was like a battle ground every single day. My self-esteem was so tied in knots there that I was literally sick to my stomach when I walked in the building everyday. Now I am free. I have never been happier in my life. I got married to my husband who I had been with for 13 years and we have our first child. The whirlwinds have calmed and I am pursuing my dream for the first time in years. Yes, it’s a little frightening to put yourself out there, but it’s time right?
